Kids can Bake too!

Yesterday for Fun Friday we had the kids bake items for the school's bakesale at our annual Fall Festival. I was nervous at first, but with careful preparation and clear instructions, we had a blast and made things that were edible and uncontaminated! We had three teachers supervise the children outside for playtime, while two of us took a small group of children to bake with in our school's certified kitchen. Needless to say, most of our goodies sold last night and the rest will definitely sell tonight! Here are the links for the recipes we used. . .with this age it's definitely safest and easiest to melt the marshmallows and butter in the microwave and to double the recipe. Also, we added Halloween Sprinkles to the Rice Krispie Treats. The pumpkin cookies should be put in the freezer after being frosted until you are ready to serve them.

Hands On Math

Today we had our students find the area of fall leaves using non-standard units. I explained that area means finding out how big the space on the inside is. After they filled up their leaves with counters, we had them individually count them out loud, watching for one-to-one correspondence. Then we wrote in their journals what the area of the leaves were and they glued in the leaves and colored them. They did a great job!

Pumpkin Exploration

Today for Fun Friday we focused on pumpkins since we are wrapping up our Pumpkin Patch Theme. My station was at the water tables. One table was filled with slices of a big pumpkin and the other table was filled with small pumpkin halves. I read a short pumpkin story before letting them explore. The boys really enjoyed splashing each other by dropping the small pumpkin halves into the water. Both groups enjoyed collecting the floating pumpkin seeds. We focused on the words float and sink. It was a success!
